Her boutique and design studio is located down a narrow lane close to the lively and hip Star Street. The showroom has a distressed, industrial feel with everything stripped bock to reveal its original shell stones walls and a concrete floor are fitted with exposed wood, and rusted steel used to display the textured, colourful designs. Spread over two levels, the loft area upstairs is used as a production and design area while downstairs, the showroom is used to present her two labels-Sonjia and Chibi.
The location and its striking interior is representative of the designs themselves, which are original, cutting edge, one-of-a-a-kind creations that effectively combine rock chic with eco chic. The Sonjia label, found on the back of many of Hong Kong’s trendy celebrities, uses leather, fur, suede and sumptuous, textured materials to create stunning layers on garments that vary from distressed leather trench coats to fabulous hand painted jackets.
Chibi, originally inspired by yoga, is a range of leisure wear worn by Hollywood celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. Alongside her own designs Soniia Norman sells selected brands such as Henry Duarte’s motorcycle bags from Los Angeles and skin belts from Divine Tribe. Hanging from the branches of a bonsai garden are stunning jewellery selected from around the world.
Clients, visiting by appointment only, can enjoy a laid bock atmosphere, listen to music and drink wine with the host, who treats her showroom as a hangout for friends and visitors as much as a place to inspire her.
